The intake kit allows you to optimize the air intake for the proper functioning of your vehicle’s thermal engine. By optimizing the air supply, this produces even more optimal combustion when air and fuel mix. So, the intake kit is a piece of equipment that you can install on your engine to improve air intake.
Discover in this article everything you need to know about the air intake kit: how it works, what it is for, how to choose it and its price!
How does an intake kit work?
The intake kit will replace the original air intake system of your vehicle. The basic intake system consists of the air filter, intake manifold, flow meter and throttle body.
Thus, the admission kit modifies several elements on your admission system such as:
- The air filter : it no longer has a housing and is completely exposed to the open air. So this new air filter consists of strips of gauze or cotton foam called Piper cross. They are cleanable and reusable, their separation is ensured by aluminum tips. It can no longer play the role of decanter for impurities;
- The outside air intake : it will be removed;
- The hoses : the original hoses are replaced in favor of new straight hoses allowing more direct air intake. If you are a fan of personalization, they can also be colored or polished.
However, you must be careful because removing the air filter housing makes it more vulnerable to foreign bodies, in particular it can store more impurities and be in the presence of water.
Furthermore, as it is no longer covered by the case, it will produce much more noise than the original model.
Why install an intake kit?

The intake kit is a system that can be installed on a vehicle when the driver wants the engine to gain power. Thus, it will make it possible to make 4 major improvements in the use of your car:
- Greater engine torque : the engine speed will be higher than with a conventional air intake system, the rotational force of the engine will therefore be increased tenfold;
- Greater engine power : the engine will be able to run at high speed more quickly. So when you press the accelerator pedal, the speed gain will be faster;
- Higher air flow : air fills the filter and hoses more easily because the housing is removed and the hoses are straight;
- Better engine operation : as the air supply is greater and more regular, the engine operating performance will be improved.
The intake kit is therefore aimed at motorists keen on speed and engine power . As this equipment alters the normal operation of the vehicle, it must be taken into account that there is a risk of loss of the manufacturer’s warranty.
Furthermore, you will need to inform the insurer so that they continue to cover you on your car insurance contract with these changes made.
Direct or dynamic admission kit: what to choose?
Currently, manufacturers offer two different types of intake kit to install on your vehicle. To help you in your choice, here is the description of the two air intake models with their advantages and disadvantages:
- The direct intake kit : it consists of a cone which will replace the air filter housing. It will suck hot air from the engine and can reduce its performance in certain situations. Thus, you will find in certain kit models, a heat shield which helps prevent loss of performance. However, even though this system is less effective than dynamic for engine performance, it delivers a very impressive sound when you accelerate;
- The Dynamic Intake Kit : This kit integrates fresh air directly from the vehicle’s bumper into a cylindrical carbon air box which is a thermal insulator. Sold more expensively, it provides higher performance than the direct intake kit and exists in a universal format or specific to a vehicle model.
There is a third, simpler installation option which is a sports air filter which you will install directly into the original air box and will increase engine performance.
How much does an admission kit cost?

Prices for intake kits can vary by up to three times depending on makes and models. On average, universal intake kits are sold between €60 and €100 . However, if you are looking for more powerful models suitable for your vehicle, it can cost up to €800.
In addition, you will need to think about the possible additional cost that you will have to pay for your car insurance contract .
The intake kit is a very useful device if you are into tuning or high performance for your engine. Be careful to mount your intake kit correctly because if it is incorrectly installed, it can cause excessive fuel consumption and engine overheating!
