Many pressures come with the first steps you take when entering college, and most of the time, you will feel as if you are in another world that is totally different from reality.
Anyone who has passed through college life can count several mistakes he or she has made, which, if avoided, things will turn out differently for them.
While I was in college, I was not very good at making friends, so because of that, I accepted anyone who showed interest in me since am not the type to go out there to freely associate with them.
So, this made me make friends with people who, in one way or another, brought setbacks and unseriousness to my studies. I did not realize this until I was at the 200 level, when my second semester was really bad, and I had 2 Es in my results.
After that, I decided to change things for myself, embrace my weaknesses, and work towards them. At first, it was really awkward trying to do what I was not used to, but if I wanted to excel, I had to do them.
Making friends in college is good, but there are types you should never make. Nobody will sit you down to lecture you when you start making friends with the wrong person, but there are signs you will see that will indicate to you a person is not right for your growth in studies, and that is what we will be discussing in this guide.
One thing I would love to note is that when you start seeing those signs that I will be showing you here, do not ignore them thinking it would be your brain trying to trick you into thinking someone is not just too good for you.
One way to overcome this is to examine each person to be sure whether they pass your descriptions of the type of friends you should allow in your life while still studying.
1. Unambitious Students
To make good grades in college requires one to be ambitious in whatever they do, be it in attending classes, going to gatherings, or writing tests and exams.
Unambitious can bring lots of setbacks in a student’s life, especially if you are already doing well in your studies and want to improve your grades.
This set of students may be really hard to spot because they attend classes as usual, submit assignments, and even attend gatherings.
One way to fish them out is when it comes to things that matter most. Things like reading and preparing for exams don’t really bother them as much because any result they see is okay with them.
You should look out for students like this and make sure you avoid them as much as you can if you really want to achieve your goal in college.
2. Addict Gambler
I had a course rep who loved gambling; he was just addicted to it and could gamble away his school fees without thinking twice.
Because he has this problem, we make contributions almost all the time for one reason, and most of the time, the contributions are not used for the purpose they were made.
He was a very brilliant student, but this problem affected his life and those that liked associating with him because they too, were sucked into gambling, and some of them found it hard to stop.
Avoid m, asking friends those students who are addicted to gambling because you too can become a gambler, and this addiction is really hard to get rid of.
3. Students With Different Goals With You
College is your key to achieving success in life, and if you mess that up, you may not have another chance to write it because life sometimes may not give you that opportunity.
Many of us have a certain goal as to why we are entering college, and when we fail to get that goal at the end of the day, we will feel as if we are failures in our careers.
Some students want to graduate with first class and others second-class while some few 3rd class. You need to define the kind of goal you want to achieve while in school and then make friends that have the same goal in school.
Now imagine yourself who wants to graduate with first class making friends with someone who does not care if he or she graduates with 3rd class.
There is no way you will make your dreams come to pass, so examine your friends, fish out those who have different goals for you, and drop them as fast as you can.
4. Students Who Belong To a Cult Group
One thing every parent tells their child who is entering college is to avoid anything that is associated with cults. This advice helped me a lot because it sounded like a reminder to me whenever I felt like I was heading in the wrong direction.
You may think that as far as you are not a cultist yourself, you do not have any problem, but that is a lie. You have a big problem. You need to stay far away from such students because they will bring lots of issues to you, which may somehow disrupt your goal in college.
5. Financially Irresponsible Students
As a college student, you need to be financially responsible in order to avoid debt and focus more on your studies.
Several students go into debt, and this debt deprives them of the peace of mind they need to push through with hard subjects.
You need to avoid students who are not responsible when it comes to finance. Those kinds of students may have a way to maneuver things for their benefit while you are stuck.
Conclusion
This guide is in no way advising you not to be free with people and avoid talking to anyone, but always be careful of the people you spend most of your time with in college.
If you take the time to read people, you should understand the kind of person anyone who comes to be your friend is and know if he or she is suitable for you.
